SYSA Pre-Game
Procedures
- It
is recommended that referees arrive 30 minutes in advance of game time. Referees MUST arrive at the field
at least 15 minutes in advance of the kickoff.
- Obtain
your game card(s) from Referee Check-in Area
- A
field inspection should be performed as the first task of the Referee
after arriving:
- Check
the nets, are they anchored properly?
- Check
for foreign objects on the field
- Check
for proper markings
- Check
for exposed sprinkler heads
- Check
for dangerous ruts
- If
you see any problems with the field, notify Don or SYSA Board
Member.
- Player
Inspection as pertains to Law IV.
- Referees should also
double-check their own appearance before the game. Jersey tucked in, shoes tied, referee
equipment ready?? Get a drink
before the game starts! Do not arrive to referee a game without your basic
equipment: a whistle, coin, pen, game card, & watch. If you are the center referee in a
three-man system, obtain the linesman flags from Don before your game. It is a great idea to fill out your
own referee kit with any other items you find occasionally useful, such as an
extra whistle, extra pen/pencil, this referee handbook, cold weather gear,
water bottle, sunscreen, lip balm, maybe even a snack.
- Introduce yourself to each
coach, get game ball from “home” team.
This is the team listed on the left of your game card. “Visiting” team
will wear pinnies, if needed.
If
you are reffing a U-10 game, make sure each of you knows which end of the field
you’re going to run. Higher grade
or first referee listed on game card is the “Senior”
referee.
